Hello everyone! I am happy to share my personal motivations for taking this CERTEFL course. My primary reason stems from my long-standing love for the subject; I thoroughly enjoyed taking advanced English in sixth form and even considered pursuing it at university level. This is a clear example of intrinsic motivation, driven by personal interest and the inherent joy of engaging with the language itself. This internal drive will positively impact my engagement by helping me sustain an interest in the course material and persevere through any complex academic challenges we encounter along the way.

Secondly, I am taking this course to become a more effective volunteer English teacher, which represents a mix of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. It satisfies an intrinsic desire for self-improvement and personal growth by developing a valuable instructional skill, while simultaneously addressing the external, practical responsibilities required by my volunteering role. This reason gives the course real-world relevance for me, which will heavily boost my focus and active participation since I can directly apply what I learn to benefit my students.

Finally, I am motivated by future career opportunities to work abroad as an EFL teacher. This is a classic extrinsic motivation, driven by the desire to enhance my long-term job prospects and open up doors for career advancement. This external reward provides a powerful incentive that will optimise my overall performance, keeping me highly goal-oriented and giving me a clear target to strive for as I master the necessary certification requirements. I look forward to hearing what drives the rest of you in this course!

@yleniaduncan Thank you for a very clear and well-organised reflection. You have addressed all three requirements effectively: you have identified three distinct reasons for taking the CERTEFL course, classified each motivation, and explained how each is likely to influence your engagement and performance.

I particularly like your second example because it demonstrates that motivation does not always fit neatly into one category. Your desire to become a more effective volunteer teacher is connected to personal growth and development, but also to the practical responsibilities of your role. The connection between what you learn on the course and how you can apply it directly with your students is likely to provide a strong source of ongoing engagement.

Hi everyone! I’m so happy to join this community and share this journey with all of you. Reflecting on why I’m taking the CERTEFL course, I’ve realized my reasons are deeply connected to who I am:

  • Helping quiet students find their voice (Intrinsic): I’ve always been fascinated by how language shapes our identity. My biggest personal drive is learning how to build safe, warm classrooms where even the most anxious or quiet students feel confident enough to speak up. Because this is a true passion of mine, it keeps me incredibly engaged; I genuinely look forward to studying the theories behind classroom dynamics.

  • Unlocking global teaching adventures (Extrinsic): On a practical level, I want to teach English abroad and experience new cultures firsthand. Having an internationally recognized certification is the key to making this dream a reality. This concrete goal keeps me highly disciplined and focused on keeping my performance standards high, even when the coursework gets demanding.

  • The creative joy of lesson design (Mixed): I absolutely love the creative process of designing interactive lessons—like real-world roleplays or creative writing tasks. This is a mix: I get pure, intrinsic joy from being creative, but I also extrinsically need the structured tools from this course to make sure my ideas actually work in practice. It ensures my lesson planning remains both imaginative and effective.

I'd love to hear what brought you all here too!

Your reasons for taking the course resonate deeply! The goal of helping quiet, anxious students build confidence and lower their affective filter is truly the heart of meaningful language teaching. In my years of teaching high school English, I’ve seen how transformative a safe classroom environment can be for hesitant speakers. Pairing that noble intrinsic passion with the creative drive for task design will serve you exceptionally well during CERTEFL module assignments. Your extrinsic goal of teaching abroad adds the perfect practical anchor to keep your momentum strong.

Wishing you an enriching journey. I am sure your future students will certainly benefit from your empathetic approach!

@ileniaesposito1 Thank you for such an engaging and thoughtful reflection. You have identified three clear and genuinely different reasons for taking the CERTEFL course, and you have made a strong effort to connect each motivation to your engagement and performance.

One aspect of your reflection particularly resonated with me: your motivation to help quiet students find their voice. This is a very learner-centred motivation, and it tells me something about the kind of teacher you aspire to become, rather than simply explaining why you want the qualification.

In fact, this is one of the things that originally motivated me to become a teacher, and it continues to be one of the reasons I am passionate about teacher training today. Helping learners and trainees develop confidence, find their voice and realise that they are capable of more than they initially believe is one of the most rewarding aspects of education.

So, while you are beginning this course with a number of different motivations, I would encourage you to hold onto this particular one. As you develop your teaching knowledge and skills, keep asking yourself: “How will what I am learning help my learners find their voice?” I think that question could become a very meaningful part of your developing teaching philosophy.

I decided to take the CERTEFL course for three main reasons.
First, I want to improve my teaching skills and gain a deeper understanding of effective English language teaching methods. This is mainly an example of intrinsic motivation, as I genuinely enjoy learning and want to become a more confident and capable teacher. I believe this motivation will keep me engaged throughout the course because I am interested in applying what I learn in real teaching situations.
Second, I would like to enhance my career opportunities by earning a recognized teaching qualification. This is mostly extrinsic motivation, since the certificate can help me qualify for better jobs and increase my professional credibility. Knowing that the course can support my future career will encourage me to stay focused and complete all the required tasks.
Finally, I hope to develop both personally and professionally by challenging myself to learn new skills. This reason reflects a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. I enjoy personal growth, but I also recognize that improving my qualifications can open new opportunities. This balanced motivation will help me remain committed, overcome challenges, and make the most of the learning experience.
Overall, these motivations will help me stay motivated, participate actively, and successfully complete the CERTEFL course.

Joining the CERTEFL course is an exciting milestone in my professional development as a high school English teacher. Here are my three main motivations:

  1. Refine my teaching methodology: This is intrinsically motivated. My desire to explore updated pedagogical techniques directly boosts my engagement, making me eager to apply new strategies in my daily classroom routines.

  2. Gain an official qualification: Achieving formal certification is extrinsically motivated. This clear goal drives my performance and keeps me focused on meeting assignment criteria promptly, ensuring steady academic progress throughout the course.

  3. Enhance student learning outcomes: Wanting better results for my students is a mix of both. Intrinsically, I find deep personal satisfaction in seeing my students succeed; extrinsically, it meets professional expectations. This dual drive keeps me fully committed, even when balancing heavy workloads.

Understanding these underlying factors helps me maintain a healthy balance between personal growth and formal requirements, ensuring a rewarding training experience.

Thanks @fabio-giobbe this is a thoughtful reflection, and I particularly relate to your point about balancing personal growth with the formal requirements of a qualification. I have been teaching and working in education for many years, and one of the things my own journey has taught me is that professional development is most valuable when it makes us stop and question what we already do. Over the years, I have moved from being a teacher, to teacher trainer, to working in educational leadership and quality assurance, and at each stage I have had to revisit my assumptions and sometimes ask myself, “Is there a better way of doing this?”

I would therefore encourage you to use the CERTEFL not simply as an opportunity to collect new techniques, but to reflect on your existing classroom practice and ask why, when and for whom a particular approach is effective. Your experience as a high school English teacher gives you a valuable foundation, so I am looking forward to seeing how you connect the theory from this course with what you already know and do in your classroom.

My first reason for taking the CERTEFL course is to strengthen my teaching practice. As an English teacher and school manager in Sicily, I already work with learners of different ages, levels and goals. However, I want to deepen my understanding of areas such as learner motivation, lesson planning, differentiation and assessment. This is mainly intrinsic motivation because it comes from my interest in becoming a more effective teacher. It will keep me engaged because I can connect each unit to real classroom situations and reflect on practical improvements.

My second reason is to gain a recognised qualification that supports my professional development and the work of my school. This is mainly extrinsic motivation, as the certificate can strengthen my professional profile and demonstrate continued training. It should help my performance because it gives me a clear long-term goal and encourages me to manage deadlines, complete tasks carefully and maintain high standards.

My third reason is to develop more digital and online teaching skills. This is a mix of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. I enjoy exploring technology and creating learning materials, while digital competence is increasingly important for learners and educational organisations. This motivation will encourage me to participate actively, experiment with ideas from the course and apply useful techniques in my own teaching context.

Overall, these motivations combine personal interest, professional responsibility and future development, helping me remain focused throughout the course.
