There are many reasons why I have decided to take this course but the main ones lie in better job prospects, personal improvement and desire to do my job well. As for the first one, driven by extrinsic motivation, I believe earning an extra opportunity to teach English abroad can only benefit my career: in case I don’t want to live in Italy anymore or I find some offers that better suit my needs, I can pack my bags and go without having to start over. In light of this, my willingness to stay focused while studying for this course is high, as there is a bigger fish I may fry; as for the second one, which revolves around intrinsic motivation, I have always believed there is room for being better than you are up to now and if you want to be the best at what you do, you have to do whatever it takes to equip yourself with all the tools you know will make you an expert in the field you want to specialize in. Especially as a young teacher, I feel this course can make a difference in the way I can deliver my classes and enhance my overall knowledge at the same time; finally, as for the third reason, I am not one of those people who only cares about a job and doesn’t take into account what consequences doing it well or badly may have on those who deal with me: for many people, learning English has been a traumatizing experience because of bad teachers and they have given up on it completely. Instead, I know that taking this course will shape me in a more aware teacher who can make a difference in his students’ life and get them to love the language like I do.
Enrolling in the CERTEFL course is a step in my journey as a teacher. It is driven by three reasons: Passion for Language Teaching (Intrinsic Motivation). I have a love for teaching a second language and for helping students talk across cultures. This inner enthusiasm keeps me curious and fully involved in learning theories thinking about practice and chatting with others on forums during the training.
Career Advancement and Formal Certification (Extrinsic Motivation) is another reason. Getting a certificate that is known worldwide gives me job chances and makes my professional status higher. This external motivation gives me rules and makes me keep my schedule finish all assignments on time and always produce good work in tests.
Building Effective Classroom Confidence (Mix of Both) is also a goal. I want to be fully confident in running different real-life classrooms. This goal mixes my wish to grow with the professional standards I need to meet. It improves my work by pushing me to use teaching methods and to ask for feedback.
By balancing my passion, with clear career goals I can stay very engaged keep my resilience in learning and keep doing my best during the whole program.
I decided to take the CERTEFL course for three main reasons, and I think my motivation is both personal and professional.
First of all, I want to learn how to teach English in a more effective way. I already have some ideas about teaching, but I would like to understand better how to plan a lesson, explain things clearly and keep students involved. This is mainly intrinsic motivation because I am genuinely curious about teaching and I enjoy learning new things. I think this will help me participate more actively in the course.
My second reason is related to my future career. Having a CERTEFL qualification could give me more opportunities to work as an English teacher, possibly in another country. This is mainly extrinsic motivation, because the certificate can be useful for my career and future job opportunities. Knowing that the course could have a practical benefit also motivates me to complete the assignments and take the course seriously.
Finally, I want to become more confident. Sometimes knowing English is not enough to feel confident about teaching it to other people. I hope this course will help me feel more prepared and less nervous when I have to teach. I see this as a mix of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, because I want to improve for myself, but I also know that greater confidence will be useful for my future career.
My Personal Motivations for Taking the CERTEFL CourseThere are three main reasons why I decided to take the CERTEFL course.Firstly, my primary motivation is intrinsic. I have always been fascinated by how languages are taught and how learning can be made more effective for different types of learners. I believe that learning a language is much more than memorizing grammar; it is a way to understand a new culture and to communicate with people on a deeper level. This personal curiosity motivates me to engage fully with theories like contextual teaching and learner differences, because I genuinely want to understand them.Secondly, my motivation is a mix of intrinsic and extrinsic. I personally believe that teaching is one of the most important jobs in the world. Without teachers, society could not function because people would not acquire the necessary knowledge and skills. I have great respect for the profession. At the same time, I am seriously considering teaching as my future career. Therefore, this motivation will make me take the course very seriously, participate actively in discussions, and reflect critically on my future role as an educator.Thirdly, my motivation is extrinsic and related to my career goals. I want to improve my employment opportunities and build a stable and rewarding career path. The CERTEFL certificate is an internationally recognised qualification that will help me achieve this. This extrinsic motivation will be particularly useful for my self-discipline: it will push me to stay organised, meet all deadlines, and maintain high standards even when the course material becomes challenging. In conclusion, these three motivations - my intrinsic interest in language and culture, my respect for the teaching profession, and my extrinsic career ambitions - work together to keep me focused, committed, and resilient throughout the CERTEFL course.
I decided to take the CERTEFL course because, despite my language background and experience with English, I believe that knowing a language and knowing how to teach it effectively are two different skills. In my private English lessons, I have noticed that students at the same level can have very different difficulties. For this reason, my first motivation is mainly intrinsic: I want to understand better the methods and strategies that can help me adapt my teaching to each student’s needs.
My second motivation comes from my experience as an ESOL Examiner. This role allows me to see language learning from a different perspective. During an exam, I can observe not only what a candidate knows, but also how well they can actually use English and how confidence can affect their performance. I consider this motivation a mix of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation because I am personally interested in understanding these aspects, but what I learn can also improve my professional skills.
Finally, I want to complete my background with specific training in teaching English as a foreign language. This motivation is mainly extrinsic because a recognised qualification can give me more professional opportunities. Having this concrete goal also motivates me to follow the course consistently and take the activities seriously.
Overall, I am taking the CERTEFL course to connect three aspects of my experience: my knowledge of English, my experience in assessment and my ability to teach the language effectively.
